Seeking, giving, considering, accepting or dismissing advice

Abstract
This paper proposes a model that locates 'advice' under the fuzzy speech act category of 'counseling' which may be formal (professional) or informal (casual and non-professional). Excluding the former from in-depth treatment, the latter accounts for seeking, giving, considering, accepting or dismissing advice in two Arabic encounters, the first of which is part of a true love story that took place in an Iraqi sub-culture in 1999, while the second is part of a 2001 Egyptian T.V. soap opera run in 2001. Manifest in both speech events are the seeker's problem, her/his intention, goal(s), medium of exchange, place, directness, social distance and, consequently, politeness. The giver's status, i.e. in what capacity, understanding, willingness, experience, background knowledge, and style are demonstrably shown to have an immense effect on the seeker. The giver's potential intentions to pursue the matter and, perhaps, to further relations with the seeker are unclear because it all depends on the seeker's perceptions, immediate and/or future behaviour consequent of the giver's feedback, and or accepting, considering, or dismissing the advice altogether.
