The Role of Linguistics

Linguistics has grown in importance due to the efforts of linguists .The need for linguistics increased , because it touched on many aspects of our lives. One of the duties of a linguist is to reduce the differences between two or more languages whether in pronunciation or orthography .For example, Arabic is composed of 28 letters , diverse in utterance & writing .This alphabet has its own identity different from others like English to a limited extent.
In Arabic , we have the sound ( غ ) .This independent sound or letter has no existence in English .Therefore , Linguists tried to find a composition correspondent to it , as they mixed two sounds "g+h" .But the process is still incomplete, because it is quite clear for a native speaker to distinguish the inadequacy in pronunciation.
This situation made it necessary to resort to new techniques . One novel technique is to create new sounds unavailable in the English orthography or phonology. The gargle sound is known and practiced by Arabs , so it is easy to make .When a linguist exposes someone to this experiment , he must help him pronounce the required sound at the end of a certain word such as "بالــغ " .
After many tries , he ought to pronounce the same sound medium in a word such as "راغب " .Finally , he ties the sound initial in a word such as "غالب " .By repeating this practice , the sound becomes easier and manageable .Another example in Arabic is " ح " .The air does not make any turbulence through the vocal cords .But the non-native speakers of Arabic make use of the glottis / h / instead of pronouncing the Arabic sound / ح / exactly , i.e., they make it by using voice and this affects the quality of this sound .
Many words comprise these voiced sounds such as ( Milh,mallah). These words comprise the sound terminally .It is better to set out the basic qualities of the sound , then to add the modification. In other words ; the sound comes intermediately such as ( Rahib,Ahmed). But, it also comes initially like in (Habeeb ,Hamid) .
This ggradation in pronouncing the sound according to its place in the word helps the learner pronounce it accurately .
Speech therapy is also one of the duties of linguists .One can find many native speakers who cannot pronounce certain letters or words .For example, some Arabs pronounce / l / for / r / .This has to do with a defect in the tongue and its place of articulation .A linguist finds out a technique in order to overcome the defect .
Linguistics is progressing as much as communication and its new techniques keep a step with this new era of technology .Our duty is to utilize such techniques in order to reduce gaps & bring closer or have a joint cultivation about civilizations .
