The Dome of the Chain
‘The Dome of the Chain’ is a hexagonal shaped small dome, carried by six columns which are surrounded by a corridor arches, lies few meters to the east of ‘the Dome of the Rock’. It was the first model of ‘the Dome of the Rock’, but Muslim architects changed their plans later and built the Dome of the Rock in the octagonal shape for some architectural and religious reasons. It was built by the Umayyad Caliph Abdulmalik Ben Marwan in 685 and was restored in 969 upon the orders of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman El-Qanuni, when a verse from the Holy Quran (the 26th. Verse of Surat Sad) containing the name of David was written inside the model dome: ‘‘O David! Verily! We have placed you as a successor on earth, so judge you between men in truth and Justice and follow not your desire …’’. In 1996 the dome was covered with lead sheets. Some Israeli scholars claim that this dome was David’s Place of Judgment according to the Story of the Chain (imaginary story holds that a chain hung from the dome which would break when grasped by a liar) and other Israeli scholars claim that it was the spot where Abraham intended to sacrifice Isaac.
